Earth Day revelry in Kota Damansara

May 5, 2008

The Earth Day celebrations organised Friends of Kota Damansara (FoKD), the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) and the Malaysian Nature Society got a lot of coverage from the local media.

According to Star Metro, more than 500 people turned up to show support for an environmental cause and to take part in the activities designed to bring awareness to the community about the rich eco-system in the park.

Nature lovers, residents and students thronged the Kota Damansara Community Forest Park to celebrate Earth Day recently.

The highlight of the celebration was nature lovers hearing the views of newly-elected representatives - Bukit Lanjan state assemblyman Elizabeth Wong, Kota Damansara state assemblyman Dr Nasir Hashim and Subang MP S. Sivarasa - on the environment and what they would do to improve the current situation.

“We want the new leaders to see how beautiful this place is and we want the forest to be gazetted. We also want to educate the public on the importance of the environment. We don’t object to development but we want it to be sustainable,” said organising chairman Anson Ooi.

Wesak Day

bubs.JPGSivarasa attended a Wesak Day ceremony organised by Bandar Utama Buddhist Society (BUBS) together with YB Tian Chua (Batu) and YB Elizabeth Wong (Bukit Lanjan, Exco member of Selangor State Assembly) recently. The event was also  attended by Datuk Manpal Singh, President of Bandar Utama Resident Association (BURA).

Sivarasa made a pledge to do all in his power to assist the Bandar Utama Buddhist Society.

Below is an excerpt from Sivarasa’s speech:

As a newly elected MP myself, I fully appreciate the vision, desire and initiative required by individual members to build and to develop something tangible out of common and lofty ideals.  In fact, I believe that where the aim is to benefit society, politicians and the religious share many common motivations and have similar concerns.  Contrary to popular beliefs, the Buddha was actually quite political.  In the suttas, we find that many kings and noblemen were his followers.  To them, he gave advice on the principles of good governance so that their countries would prosper and develop in peace. On another occasion he counselled and discouraged a king over his plans for war and on yet another occasion, he actively intervened between two parties fighting over water rights asking “which is more precious? A drop of water or a drop of your brother’s blood?.  bubs-speech.JPG I fully understand your requirements for your own centre and would do whatever is in my power to assist the Bandar Utama Buddhist Society in this effort and would like to wish all of you a Happy Wesak.  May the blessings of the Triple Gem be with you and your family always.

Parliament Time

Today is the big day - when the new Dewan Rakyat convenes and our MP gets sworn in. Malaysians have been eagerly waiting for this day since the historic March 8 political tsunami. On Wednesday, we will get to see the MPs in action when the Question Time is telecast live on television.

The excitement to see the new MPs in action was marred when MSM and bloggers picked on MPs who did not send in their questions on time but our Subang MP Siva had managed to send in his questions: Read More »
